"Unie Kaas Cheese Tray #1064©" is approximately 10" x 8". The artist has used a clear recycled wine bottle that is fused at 1465° F for about 9 hours from start to finish. She then uses a trade secret method to reattach the original label and create a finish that is glass hard without burning up the lable. The total time from start to finish with all the stages of creating this piece of functional art is about 6 days. Whenever she fuses a clear wine bottle, she may attache the original label, picture or copy of art work under the the fused glass so the top cutting surface is pure glass. Many times she will just put some of the labels from her favorite cheeses.

Well, the heat has abated and I am finally out of my painting slump. Here is

It has been very hot here and I have been wanting to learn how to etch on my recycled glass wine bottles and I finally got around to it. This bottle was slumped with a handle and it has a tropical fish etched onto it. I made it into a cheese dish for Glynis.

It was done in a very large blasting box and for my next one I will need to find a stool to stand upon.

Another bright, blue sky day. I rarely paint the same thing twice as my mind is too eclectic or weird as some members of my family labels. However, a bright, blue sky day brought me out into my gardens early today when it was chilly and eventually my old friendly, faded gardening jacket got removed and hung up on the pole.

Upon turning around at one point in my weeding I noticed the jacket from a "different point of view" and it caused me to do two things. One was to create another painting of my gardening jacket and the second was to do some honest to good thinking about "different points of views". Who knows why as I did not intend to make a quilt and I found 3 button up sweatshirts on sale in Wal-mart one day which I purchased and proceeded to put a quilt patch on the back of each and make pockets on the front of each side with smaller quilt patches. I eventually sold one in the campground store, gave one away as a gift and retained the black one for my own use.
It has served me well and I usually wear it whenever I do outside work and often in the art studio when there is a chill. It has gotten pretty ragged and has evidence of art work on it where paint has spattered or I have wiped my hands or even a paint brush now and then. Lately I have thrown it in the trash about 4 times. However, like a small child with it's security "woobie" I haul it out just before the trash is taken down the drive, wash it one more time and put it back on.
When the day warms up as I work outside this old faded jacket comes off and is hung on the nearest post. Today I decided to paint a picture of it. I have omitted the landscape background because I felt it would take away from the jacket. Just about every thing an artist paints has a story and this is the story of this painting titled "Arlene's Gardening Jacket".

I finally was able to get out of the stained glass studio and finish up a bunch of kiln fusing projects. Now I am back to painting.. I worked in the big studio this morning on a really big picture that I am doing and can only do so much at a time on it. It is a pallette knife work in acrylics.

I went into my original small art studio and decided to paint a picture of one of my grandsons. Ryan's dad had just sent me a small wallet size photo of this year's school picture.

Since I am practicing painting children with colored pencils here was a good subject to work from.

Overcast and windy today. I have plants to put in the big containers, but too chilly so I painted this little bird instead. I have asked customer service at Birds & Blooms what it is. Waiting for an answer. I have a hired man working in the gardens today and he is doing a grand job. Hopefully, he will show back up tomorrow. I have at least 2 full days work, perhaps 3.

So until I learn the correct name for this bird, I am calling it Little Brown Bird.

I have been designing and creating artist renderings of stained glass patterns for the new Glasgow Public Library. I have to do 4 of them and here is one they accepted. Now three more to go.

As soon as all submitted 4 panels are accepted by their committee, the stained glass artist will start creating the windows for them. The panels represent the Barren River County Rural life in Glasgow KY.

I don't know who the old master is who painted the original painting, but I liked the layout and I did this small 8" x 10" oil on board today and put in the faces of Piper with eyeglasses, Donna in red jacket and Andrew in the middle and I call it "Old Master's Happy Hour". I think I should do these in acrylics as it dries so fast and I can work the faces better as opposed to oils which I become impatient with because of their slowness. I put it in a nice gold wooden frame. After 2 days in the 70's it is trying to snow now! Yikes!

The other day a short story of mine titled, "My Grandmother's Button Jars" was published and it is a childhood memory of playing with those buttons.

Today I was in the mood to paint and decided I would work on a daily painting which is usually a miniature.

However, I did this 12" x 16" Mixed Media painting on Fredrix art canvas using Dr. Martins Hydrus watercolors and Dr. Martins white acrylic paint. My daughter, Donna, sent me a picture of the boys in 2005 and it is one of my favorites. Ryan is impish as usual, Scott is somber and Andrew is happy as always to have his cousins come and visit. This picture has been on my refrigerator for 4 years and over those years the cousins have grown, with 2 of them into their teens this year. Also their minds have grown as their activities have. Snow boarding, water & snow skiing, computers, golf, all kinds of sports, music lessons, book reading and more. The bat is a memento from when we took Andrew to the Louisville Slugger Factory and they made him a bat with his name on it. This year I thought I would try my hand at Folk painting and this 16" x 20" acrylic is the result. It took me about 8 days with about 4 hours a day average. Faces are not my forte yet, but I really enjoyed painting this memento of 3 fine grandsons. The title of the painting is "The Cousins and The Games They Play"

I have neglected this site... Been busy painting....Portrait of a Stained Glass Artist
The artist, Arlene Wright-Correll says, "I think it was in March 1999 I started a portrait of Carl on a 16" x 20" canvas frame. I drew it out and did the background in oils. We were in FL. for the winter visiting Donna and her family and Andrew, who was about 5 or 6 then, upon arriving home said, "Oh you are doing a painting of Opa." That was as far as I ever got with it. Then in February of 2008 I started thinking about it again since I kept coming across it in my art studio and thought about doing a caracature of him with stained glass eye glasses. Well on Feb. 4, 2009, I got out the painting and decided to finish it in acrylics and 4 hours later I finished it to my satisfaction and Carl is delighted. It is called, "Portrait of a Stained Glass Artist". Is this what is called an epic? 10 years in the making!

Cheese Tray 1001

Am in a painting slump so I am working on some glass pieces in the kiln. All this winter weather has put my creativity into hibernation. Here is a fused bottle into a cheese tray at 1495 degrees and then the swiss cheese is painted on with Pebeco and fired again at 300 degrees. This one is sold.

"The Snow Tiger©" is an 11" x 7.5" gouache watercolor painting created by award winning artist, Arlene Wright-Correll, on 100% acid free, hand made cotton rag watercolor paper. Basically a snow tiger is really a white Bengal Tiger and they are good swimmers, but poor climbers and they are slower than other tigers, but stealthy enough to catch their prey. They are solitary cats and hunt by night. Their bodies grow to about nine feet and their tail can be 3 or 4 feet long. In the wild they live to about 10 years and their age is doubled in a zoo.

"Elephant Walk II" Fusing glass has been around since the beginning of time being discovered accidentally as most things are. Firing painted stained glass has been around for over 1000 years.
Three years ago a new method of fusing and firing painted stained glass through several stages was created by the famous artist, Peter McGrain who developed a style he calls Vitri-Fusáille© (Pronounced Vitri-fuse-i) and I had attended two of his workshops in NV to learn McGrain's method. Though know for the hugh stained glass walls he has created in airports and many other places over the last 20 years, he is quite collectable in the small pieces of Vitri-Fusáille© art he creates.
"Elephant Walk II" and it is a 12" x 12" piece completed in the Vitri-Fusáille© method and sits in a wrought iron stand.

I have been painting on fused glass again.

Though not a daily painting, I finally finished this watercolor after 4 straight days of working on it. It is a gouache watercolor on 100% acid free handmade cotton rag paper than then float matted on an olive green back mat. I then set a large black mat around the whole thing and put it into a 19" x 14" gold frame.

I will enter it this week as one of my two entries into the annual Captial Theater Fine Arts Competion this Friday over in Bowling Green. I never get accepted and I am probably blowing my entry fees again this year. There are literally hundreds of entries and some of them really, really good and they don't get accepted either and that helps with the rejection. The final display area is small so the juror has to remember that and the juror usually likes the big "artsy" pieces that have some sort of message that I never understand, but apparently everyone else does. Carl has been accepted every time he enters and sometimes wins, but then there is usually not much in his catagory of stained glass. My other entry will be a fused piece called "A Square Universe." .. So we will see as "nothing ventured, nothing gained".

Today I stopped at the local farmer's market and picked up some fresh garlic, brought it home to cook with, but painted a picture of it before using it. "Fresh Garlic" is a miniature 3" x 5" gouache watercolor painting on 100% acid free, cold pressed watercolor paper and matted in a 5" x 7" mat.

Just returned from FL and GA and picking up the newest and latest in stained glass, molds and Float Fire glass so that made for a week without painting and now trying to control the weeds in the garden. Even so it is sure pretty out there and perhaps you would like to take a walk in my Garden.

The weather has broken here and the garden and greenhouse is now taking precedent over a great deal of my time. Plus I am working on some fusing glass projects in my kiln and have been working on a large painting. So here is one of I did a while back.

It is a watercolor and it is titled, "Welcome to Boot Hill".

Well, I don't know whether or not I like this new blog or not. I don't know where all my earlier posts went to with all my daily paintings. So after jumping through a lot of unnecessary hoops and finally giving up trying to think of answers to all of those idiotic, juvenile questions after I had to redo my profile here is today's painting.

Betty is a hostess in one of Las Vegas's newest and most elegant restaurant, "Six Tables" owned by my dear friends, Chef Roland Levi and his wife Gail. This is the latest star in their "Six Tables" Crown and when I was there in early April I told Betty I would paint her picture and I have on a 6" x 6" piece of glass and did two firings of it in my kiln. I will edge it in lead caming, put a chain on it so she can hang it in her window and send it to her.
